Hi all! Happy New Year!! I hope everyone had a great time last night, I know Emily and I sure did here in Lewiston with the relatives.
We finally left Saskatoon on the 29th by 1pm, quite a bit later than I had planned. As a result, I drove like a bat outta hell so that we would make the border before it closed. The weather was pretty good except for just out of Swift Current where skies were blue but on the ground the snow was blowing so bad it was drifting across the highway and decreasing visibility greatly. We pressed on. The border guard was friendlier than anticipated. Becky and Bob had got us all worked up about the guards and said say as little as possible. When the guy asked where we were headed and Emily responded, “The States..” I thought I should step in because that answer just sounded sketchy! We had to do some prepping before we got to the border…Emily stuffed down a whole bunch of cheese and meat (not allowed to cross the border), then some apples…Then I stashed my sweet grass under the seat incase they wouldn’t want me to take that because I guess it is a plant, even though its dry. Emily was happy that we still had it, as am I, and she said maybe it would help us somewhere down the road. I think she’s right.
We made it to Joe and Marie’s just outside of Roundup sometime around 9pm. 8 hours total trip…it usually takes 10-11hrs as I remember making the trip with the family haha! So we “helped” Kevin assemble his ice fishing sled/hut thing while drinking beer, and I witness coal burning in a wood stove for the first time. Strange thing watching rocks burn! Spent the night and next day touring a bit. Joe drove us to see the relatives house which is right near these rock dwellings. They were these houses (abandoned) right in the side of the rock with built up walls, windows and doors. Really neat! I would post pictures if I could, but so far no dice. I hate driving in the dark for fear of hitting deer, but by the time we left Roundup it was again dark as we descended HorseThief Road. Aunty Marie had given me a bunch of quarters to wash the thick crust of salt off my car, so we headed back to the carwash I had seen in town. When we got there, the hose leaked, and the light in the bay was broken. I took the leaky wand and started getting the car wet as Emily plopped in quarters. I was kneeling down when she was about to put in the last one….”READY??!!” she said….I said yes, but a half second later proved myself wrong as the wand bucked in my hand, into the wheel-well splashing muddy water back in my face and all over my nice clean jacket damn it! The job was poorly done in the dark, and I since have gone to an automatic wash as directed by my 11yr old cousin
Jeez louis I like to write! I haven’t even got to the good stuff about the dancing, beer-pong games, ice fishing on tiny ponds referred to as lakes, Uncle Dale wearing red plaid pants, long blonde hair and a beard, Christmas lights wrapped round his head and neck, and a 2002 Olympic USA hat using a syringe to inject his smoking turkey with butter! And then there is the Landshark beer and San Lucas beer from El Salvador, and the terrible coriander beer that Emily likes . Dancing in the kitchen with cousin Todd, Emily, Aunty Anj and Me to Sugarland, Lady Antebellum… AND THEN!! ..Uncle Dale’s Semi-Automatic machine gun (holy crap!!) YEEEEHHAAAAA!!! We’s in MONTANA WWWEEEEYYOUUU!! Haha. There are pictures and no I am not posting them or taking that memory card into Mexico! Well I better stop writing now and stop being a snob here. Tomorrow we are off to Boseman to see Todd’s place and stay with him a day. Monday we well try to get into Yellow Stone National Park to see Ole Faithful provided that the roads are open. If they are closed…well I haven’t figured out where we will go exactly. I guess we’ll head for Salt Lake City, Utah and then just hope roads are good as we pass through the mountains!
